Summer Fun 101: Tips for Nannies to Make the Most of the Season with Kids ☀️

Summer is almost here, and it’s the perfect time for nannies to bring extra fun, creativity, and adventure into the lives of the children they care for. Whether you’re with toddlers or tweens, here are some tips to help you plan a safe, memorable, and joy-filled summer!

  1. Plan a Weekly Theme

Creating weekly themes can give structure to your summer fun. Think: “Nature Week,” “Water Week,” “Around the World,” or “STEM Explorers.” Each day, plan a small activity, outing, or craft that ties into the theme. Kids love the anticipation, and it makes planning easier for you!

  1. Make a Summer Bucket List

Sit down with the kids (if age-appropriate) and create a “Summer Fun List” together. Include simple things like:
    •    Have a backyard picnic
    •    Make homemade popsicles
    •    Go on a bug hunt
    •    Paint with water on the sidewalk
    •    Build a blanket fort

Let the kids check off items throughout the summer—it gives them a sense of excitement and involvement.

  1. Get Outside (Early or Late)

Beat the heat by getting outside earlier in the day or after dinner. Try:
    •    Nature walks or park scavenger hunts
    •    Sidewalk chalk games
    •    Water balloon toss or sprinkler play
    •    Biking or scootering adventures

Don’t forget sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water!

  1. Create a “Rainy Day” Kit

Have a stash of indoor activities ready for rainy or too-hot-to-play days:
    •    DIY crafts (pipe cleaners, beads, or recycled materials)
    •    Baking simple snacks
    •    Indoor obstacle courses
    •    Story time or puppet shows
    •    Building challenges with blocks or Legos

  1. Support Summer Learning (Sneakily!)

Learning doesn’t stop just because school is out! Mix in playful ways to keep brains active:
    •    Reading challenges or library visits
    •    Educational games or apps
    •    Nature journaling
    •    Science experiments (think: baking soda + vinegar magic!)

  1. Involve Kids in Planning

Let kids choose between two activities or help prep snacks. Giving them a little control can go a long way in creating buy-in and excitement.

  1. Keep it Simple and Fun

Summer memories are made in the simple moments—laughing in the backyard, making a craft that turns into a mess, or eating popsicles on the porch. You don’t need big outings or expensive supplies. Your creativity and presence make all the difference!

Bonus Tip: Stay Connected with Parents

Keep a journal, send photos (with permission), or give quick updates at pick-up. Parents love hearing about what their kids are doing—and it shows you’re invested, responsible, and proactive.
